cheap way to do taxes?

Postby everypennycounts » Fri Feb 13, 2009 3:31 pm

I usually use HR Block tax software to file taxes each year, but it is so expensive. I'd like to hear your ideas of how you file taxes cheaply.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions

Depending on how complicated your taxes are, I believe there are places where you can prepare and file online for free. And don't forget all of those CATs that have been printing for H&R Block (or maybe I am the only one who has received many of these!). I am sure that would help with the cost.

I used Turbo tax on line last year. It has several different levels of difficulty and pricing.

Tax Software

Postby brownjkb » Fri Feb 13, 2009 4:14 pm

I use http://www.taxact.com/. It is a lot cheaper than any other tax software packages out there and they have a quick turnaround with questions emailed to them.

Hope this helps.

I used freetaxusa.com and my federal was free and state tax was only 9.95. Last year I used another company with the same results and was going to use that one again this year HOWEVER when I entered my info in, it gave me my refund amount but didnt give me a screen to do direct deposit. That is why I tried the other company. NOt only was the state tax cheaper to file but I also got almost 300 more in my refund that the other company had quoted me.

Actually, if you visit the IRS website (www.irs.gov) there is a link for "Free File" which takes you to a page where you can find a company that does taxes online for free. There are plenty of options, each with different requirements for maximum income and so on.

H&R Block is on the list.

Be careful with these services, though, as they may offer other bells and whistles that end up costing extra. They may charge for filing state taxes, too. Just read carefully and know what you're agreeing to when clicking.

Depending on your income, you may qualify for free preparation through VITA, an IRS-driven program. State Employees' Credit Union offers it, and you can find more info there at http://www.ncsecu.org/Services/VITAFree ... ation.html

Other places offer free preparation as a part of the same program, but I don't know what they are.

I also used freetaxusa.com, very easy & cheap plus it only took 7 days for me to get both of my refunds. I showed it to my aunt(she usually does everyones taxes in the family) & she said she was going to start using that too.

I honestly would not use VITA at all. I've prepared many returns over the years and some of my clients' returns that were prepared by VITA had a lot of errors on them. I prepared many amended returns because of these errors. I learned many years ago, unless it has changed, that the people who work for VITA take a crash course in tax preparation. Many of them do not know enough about the tax code to help the client out.

If you make less than 53k/year you can e-file for free. Go to www.irs.gov and click on e-file. It will direct you to a number of vendors. I did my little sister's and it was really easy. I chose h&r block freefile. If you pick direct deposit you will get it in about 10 days.
